About Me

Exceptional Expertise & Passion Born From Lived Experience
About Jo Bonser Consultancy And Training
People living with dementia often have problems eating, and they can find the mealtime environment extremely challenging. Coupled together, these conditions mean malnutrition is common.

But it doesn’t have to be.

How do I know? I’ve been through it personally.

I improved and extended my own mum’s life by 4.5 years through careful observation, a whole load of love and some minor changes to mealtimes, and I guarantee I can  do the same for the people you care for.

By working with families, staff and carers, I change the lives of ladies and gents living with dementia. Through happier and healthier mealtime experiences, people in your care can start eating again, and your heart can stop breaking.

Why Choose Jo Bonser Consultancy And Training

Exceptional Drive
Helping others like I helped my Mum is the heartbeat of my whole world. You don’t need to worry about an impersonal, clinical service because it will always be me who visits you, sees how things are going and holds your hand when you can’t hold back the tears.

Thorough Commitment
It's not on you to do this alone. To get your ladies and gents eating and living well, we need to work together, and I pride myself on my positive, collaborative approach because it works. Small steps are big wins. We can do this!

Heartfelt Expertise
There’s no one else doing what I do in the UK. I have 33 years of experience working with care homes, hospitals and clients' own families at home. Not only have I seen it all, but I’ve walked in their shoes, giving me a full circle of knowledge and experience to share.

My Story

The beginning of my story is bittersweet because the reason I do what I do is simple. My mum, who died in 2020.

Mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2014, and she stopped eating over the Christmas period of 2016. I remember it like it was yesterday. If you’ve ever watched someone you care for begin to waste away, you’ll know what I mean. It’s heartbreaking. But she simply refused to eat or drink.

Through repeat urine and chest infections, care professionals continued to tell me that Mum had given up, and that I should accept she would not be with me much longer. Rather than giving up myself, my professional experience told me otherwise. I refused to listen, and I took charge of mealtimes.

And I watched her.

I noticed her mealtime behaviours and what her eating environment was like. Sounds, noises, people, clutter. All the small things that wouldn’t matter to anyone else. I watched, and I tweaked. And I watched and tweaked some more.

And mum started eating again. Independently! She kept eating, kept gaining weight and enjoyed a good quality of life for another four and a half years.

After witnessing Mum’s transformation, I wanted to share what I’d learnt  and so I created a FREE resource, my 37 page Dignified Dining Solutions Guide, and the response was incredible. What I had was a book that tackled the challenges of dementia mealtimes and offered tried-and-tested suggestions, and it took the care world by storm everywhere, from care homes to dieticians, as well as the NHS.

But I needed to reach more people. I presented workshops in a bid to spread what I had learned, and I even shot a professionally filmed video titled ‘Made With Love’ that went viral! When I’d read that my video had been dubbed the ‘go-to training resource for care home caterers’, I knew I had something worth shouting about.

I officially founded Jo Bonser Consultancy and Training in early 2022, and I’m delighted to say I’ve been involved in transforming the lives of ladies and gents living in care homes since.

I really think Mum would be proud of what I’m doing. I know I am.

Transparency Throughout

We’ve got to be real. This is no one’s fault, and we can change things for the better, but honesty is the best policy, always.

Dignity For All

So many people with dementia are forgotten about. But they’re someone's mum, daughter, or friend, and they matter.

A Core Of Compassion

Dignified mealtimes for ladies and gents with dementia, and less stress for those who care for them, really matter to me. It hits home hard. So I am committed to helping as many people as I can.
